Unit 4E    Modelling effects on screen

This unit builds on Pixie or Roamer work at Key Stage 1 and lays the foundation for control technology at upper Key Stage 2 and beyond.

Key objective Can create a pattern with a Logo type application QCA Website
Revise directional language and storing and responding to instructions. 'Program' the children to walk to your or each others' commands. Encourage them to 'store' instructions in their memories and carry them out on the command of 'Go'.
Driving the turtle around the screen Load the program 'Black Cat Logo' and explore the yellow level.

Find out what the icons on the left hand side of the screen do.

Work with at partner and try to draw a shape blindly by giving verbal instructions.

Angles and units of turn Change to the green level. Experiment with angles and distances.

By clicking one of the two turn buttons and then 'Enter' without defining an angle of turn you will see the protractor tool...

Try also clicking either the forward or backward button and then the 'Enter'. You will see the ruler tool...

Consider the use of these tools as opposed to trial and error estimation of angle and distance.

Repeats Input two commands on one line and then enclose them in a repeat command using the repeat key.

explore using this technique to draw regular polygons.

Procedures Define a procedure to draw an interesting shape. Give it a totally arbitrary name. Note that repeats within procedures need to be written long hand, there is no repeat button.

Return to the main screen and run the procedure.

Geometrical patterns Experiment with repeat commands which draw upon one or more procedure and, in so doing, draw a geometric pattern.
Stained-glass windows Change to the blue level.

Draw a geometric pattern with quite thick black lines. from the File menu choose 'Save As Image' and give your pattern a suitable filename and location (i.e.. my documents).

Load Fresco and load your pattern. Use the fill tool to create a stained-glass effect.
