Unit 4B    Developing images using repeating patterns

This unit builds on a Year 2 Unit in which children are taught to use the following tools of a paint program:

Unit 4B extends the concepts of cut, copy and paste to working with images. The activities using a scanner are contrived and impractical; consider getting images onto the computer using a digital camera instead.

Paint programs provide us with an ideal opportunity to encourage experimentation and creativity and so a loose interpretation of this unit can be justified.

Repeating patterns Load 'Fresco'

Experiment with select, copy and paste to generate repeating patters in the style of gift wrap or wallpaper.

Try opening two Fresco windows and cutting and pasting between them.

Try copying photographs from the Word Wide Web (via RH click) and pasting them into Fresco.

Experiment using the commands from the 'Area' menu of Fresco.

 
Georges Seurat Use the Google image search to find some examples ot the work of George Seurat.

Explore the various brush options of Fresco to recreate the style of Seurat.

Symmetry Explore the use of Fresco's symmetry tool.  
The fill tool Create a black on white grid in Logo and save it a s a Jpeg image. Open the image in Fresco and use the fill tool to colour it in the style of a stained glass window. Compare the on-screen result with printed output.  
Collage Discuss the ICT based collage techniques and how they are applied commercially.  Consider the use of web based resources and digital photographs as a source of images.
